yank
(also "pull, jerk") a shot that goes severely to the left of the target line (for a right-handed player)
Example: She yanked/pulled/jerked her tee shot into the trees.
yardage
(e.g., "yardage book, yardage marker") distance measured in yards
Example: Some golf courses have yardage markers on all relevant sprinkler heads.
yardage book
a small booklet (given out or sold by a course, or created by the player or caddy) to keep various yardages, landmarks, references and notes about each hole on a particular golf course
Example: The yardage book was very thorough and detailed, making my club selections much easier.
yardage marker
some type of landmark (usually permanent) indicating the yardage to the green -- most commonly measured to the center of the green but occasionally measured to the front of the green at a few rare courses
Example: Typical yardage marker objects might include stones, trees, sprinkler heads and other things.
yips
nervous twitching or jerking in the putting stroke rhythm resulting in poor accuracy and a lack of touch (also might occur in other short game strokes, usually thought of as a result of anxiety, but supposedly some cases can also be focal dystonia-related)
Example: Fortunately, only a small percentage of golfers experience the yips.
